As a follow-up to his presentation at the NPI Luncheon in June 2009, Tom Neilson has provided the following resource information on Transpersonal Psychology:
Big Mind Big Heart: Finding Your Way by Zen Master Dennis Genpo Merzel. This book is a good introduction to the Big Mind Big Heart process, which is a useful way of connecting with the transpersonal.
Big Mind Big Heart Revealed by Zen Master Genpo Merzel. This 2 DVD set shows Genpo Roshi doing Big Mind Big Heart with a group of people. It offers a valuable experiential introduction to the process.
Embracing Ourselves: The Voice Dialogue Manual by Hal and Sidra Stone. This book is an introduction to Voice Dialogue, which is a useful approach to therapy that is the foundation of Big Mind Big Heart.
Embracing Your Inner Critic: Turning Self-Criticism into a Creative Asset by Hal and Sidra Stone. This book applies the Voice Dialogue process to people who are excessively self-critical. It is an excellent book. Many of our therapy clients come to treatment because they are self-critical and this is the most useful resource I have found for working with them. The book is written both for therapists and clients.
The Unfolding Now: Realizing Your True Nature through the Practice of Presence by A. H. Almaas. This book is an excellent resource for developing presence and doing the work of getting in touch with one’s True Nature. Almaas’ work (known as The Diamond Approach) is deep and profound, and has been praised by Joan Borysenko, John Welwood, Ken Wilber, and many others. Jack Kornfield says “The work of A. H. Almaas places him among the greatest psychologists alive today”.
Anyone interested in learning more about transpersonal psychology is invited to attend the Transpersonal Psychology Study Group, which is co-lead by [NPI members] Michelle Pearce and me [Tom Neilson]. We meet on the first Sunday of the month from 6:30-8:00 at the Vanderbilt Center for Integrative Health. Our next meeting will be in August 2009.
